Aims: To provide a comprehensive understanding of the environmental impact of buildings, both the environment local to the building and the wider environment.
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of the unit students will have demonstared the ability to systematically evaluate the environmental impacts of buildings in terms of: * Energy use, * Use of resources other than energy, * Effect on local eco-systems, * Effect of communities through increased transport and other ancillary activities. Skills: Systematic evaluation of environmental impact of buildings, ability to resolve the multi-dimensional problem of reducing environmental impact, ability to balance the many conflicting requirements to reduce environmental impact. Content: Life cycle analysis of materials and systems, low carbon approaches to construction including pre-fabrication, waste minimisation, minimisation of transporting materials. Site eco-systems and how they may be changed by construction and operation of buildings, integrating buildings within eco-systems. Local transport and delivery systems, provision for commuters and visitors to travel by different means. Demands made on infrastructure such as waste disposal, power and water supply. |
