Aims & Learning Objectives:
To allow students to actively engage in current debates within Physical Activity and Health that have the potential to affect health and quality of life throughout an individual's lifetime. On completion of this unit students should be able to:
* Demonstrate the ability to synthesise current opinion on various complex unresolved arguments in Physical Activity and Health that have the potential to affect health and quality of life at any stage of an individual's lifetime.
* Demonstrate the ability to use an evidence-based approach to draw together various lines of evidence that both support and refute alternate perspectives of current controversies.
Content:
Lectures provide contextual information and introduce the different problems/debates covered during the unit. Contextual information includes; physiological processes, epidemiology of physical activity and chronic disease, research design, fundamentals of Public Health and principles and practice of behaviour modification strategies The problem-based learning sessions address topical controversies in Physical Activity and Health that are relevant to the aims of the unit, including controversies that are partially resolved and others that are far from resolution.
