FH50090 Research in practice: design and development

Requisites:
Before taking this unit you must take FH50079 and take FH50089
Aims:
* To formulate and defend the stages in the planning and presentation of an independent research project.
* Develop a full proposal for a research topic suitable for completion as a dissertation project.
* To refine and further develop the skills of a competent researcher.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit the student will be able to:
1. Critically review and synthesise the literature identified from a systematic search of previous research work and published evidence of relevance to it.
2. Describe different qualitative and quantitative approaches and apply them in the correct context.
3. Understand different sampling and data analysis techniques and select them appropriately.
4. Demonstrate appropriate application of project planning tools
5. Apply these skills to the development of a detailed research protocol suitable for a dissertation project.
6. Demonstrate the relevance and potential impact of this project to their practice.
7. Consider the ethical and governance issues specific to their research area and prepare a detailed research ethics application to a suitable and appropriate body (for example LREC, MREC; NHS R&D) and the School Research Ethics Committee
8. Complete at least one cycle of a personal development plan and to identify goals in research and continuing professional development
9. Reflect on own development as a researcher within the timeframe of the PDP cycle
10. Present the outline of the research proposal to peers
These learning outcomes will be taught, facilitated and assessed.
Skills:
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
1. Develop a proposal for a research topic suitable for completion as their dissertation project (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: taught and assessed).
2. Literature review. Critically appraise the results of their enquiry and apply this knowledge to the development of their research protocol (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: facilitated and assessed).
3. Ethical and governance approval. (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: facilitated and assessed).
4. Create a poster presentation (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: taught and assessed).
Content:
1. The content of this Unit will focus on any area of health or related research for which an adequate level of supervision can be offered.
2. Project design and management: refine a research question for primary research supported by a literature review, design a protocol to completion, ethical approval, Gantt chart and costs.
3. Presentation: display this work in a poster format to peers and as a substantial portfolio including reflective commentary, learning needs assessment and personal development plan.
