Requisites:
Aims: This Unit aims to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement teaching and learning activities within their professional role.
Learning Outcomes:
Knowledge and Understanding
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Critically describe philosophies of education
* Describe education as a change process and reflect on its role in their specific context and organisation
* Critical evaluate processes of learning and models for facilitating learning and supporting students
* Contrast the components of an effective learning environment
* Evaluate different methods for assessment of practice and identify their appropriate use in different contexts
These learning outcomes will be taught and assessed.
Skills:
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
* Plan a programme of learning for a topic within their area of professional expertise
* Present a topic utilising a variety of learning and teaching methods
* Design an assessment plan for a programme
* Observe and evaluate teaching in practice
* Plan and manage their learning through reflecting on and analysing their own learning needs.
* Integrate and critically evaluate information gathered from a wide range of resources including the unit resources, text books, journal articles, web pages and other online resources. An appreciation for a hierarchy of evidence should be displayed.
* Communicate effectively with colleagues and tutors including through asynchronous online discussions.
These learning outcomes will be facilitated and some may be assessed.
Content:
It will review and critically appraise different approaches to learning and teaching, including those adopted by the School for Health for its postgraduate education, in areas such as reflective practice, learner-centred approaches and the development of learning communities of practice. Building upon theories of education and concepts of learning design it will develop ideas for application and implementation of learning solutions relevant to individual needs which might include:
* Lifelong learning and cpd
* Blended and e-learning
* Experiential and work-based learning
* Group facilitation
* Personal development planning and mentoring
* Development of learning outcomes
* Assessment techniques and procedures
In relating to the learners' own practice setting it will introduce the following concepts and topics:
* Philosophies of education, theories of teaching and learning
* Education as a change process, transformation within learners, teachers and organisations
* The adult as a learner, learner empowerment.
* The processes of learning, models for facilitating learning and supporting students
* Staff development - the role of the tutor, mentor, educational designer
* Teaching methods in professional healthcare practice, personal development planning, reflective practice
* Developing an effective learning environment
* E-learning and blended learning - design and delivery
* Open and distance learning
* Assessment of practice: models of assessment;
* guidance and feedback
* Quality assurance: audit and evaluation.
