FH50137 Sports physiotherapy in practice I

Requisites:
Aims: The aim of this unit is to enable the student to produce a professional practice portfolio within which they will identify and develop ongoing learning needs. This will be achieved using reflective practice and continuing education experiences, as required by professional bodies.
Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
1. Plan and manage independent learning and develop sustainable strategies for lifelong learning and future professional development.
2. Critically evaluate the legal, ethical and social roles, responsibilities and expectations of physiotherapy practice within the sports professional network.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the role and responsibilities of the sports physiotherapist within a multi-disciplinary team to athletes in the sport environment.
4. Attain qualification to meet health and safety requirements, emergency care and advanced trauma management of those engaged in sport or exercise.
5. Critically evaluate and synthesise information from a variety of sources in the provision of physiotherapy services to athletes of all ages and abilities in different sporting contexts.

Content:
1. PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
The identification of legal issues, national and international professional standards relevant to sports physiotherapy and service delivery, including risk assessment procedures and health and safety regulations, including sport-specific legal and ethical regulations
2. SAFER SPORT
The specific qualifications relating to cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first responder skills, and current good practice in relation to blood hygiene, blood-borne pathogens, and health and safety practices and regulations.
3. LIFELONG LEARNING
The importance of ongoing learning to ensure quality of service provision and identify a variety of mechanisms for professional development from different information and media networks, compiled as a professional practice portfolio.
Collection of information that allows ongoing evaluation of practice and evidence for knowledge and skill development. For example peer evaluations, client views, audit and outcomes research, critical reflection on personal experiences, identifying strengths and areas for further development.
Respond to identified learning needs. For example through the collection and analysis of information that fills gaps in professional knowledge, locating opportunities for skill development, independent and experiential learning, mentoring, participation in accredited and non-accredited courses.
4. BEST PRACTICE
Defining evidence based practice and best practice, communication strategies and opportunities for dissemination and discussion of new information. Synthesise information from different sources, the critical analysis of existing sports policies and relevant clinical guidelines and decision making.
Note: To evvidence workplace learning, students will be provided with specific practice reflection and evaluation frameworks, proformas for reflection on significant incidents and peer review audit tools. The developed portfolio of evidence will be presented and expressed against specific learning outcomes.
A specific Experiential Verification Certificate (EVC) will be required from each practice base or sporting environment in which workplace learning is evidenced. It is envisaged that submission of an EVC will be required for 1-2 practice bases which underpin experiential learning in this Unit.
