FH50142 Performance physiotherapy

Credits: 18
Level: Masters
Modular: no specific semester
Assessment: CW80OT20
Requisites:
Aims: This unit aims to develop theoretical and clinical knowledge of athlete and injury management in the sporting context, enabling appreciation and understanding of complex clinical scenarios. This includes adopting multi-professional, evidence based approach to injury management and intervention programmes, based on ongoing assessment and interpretation.
Learning Outcomes:
The learning outcomes must be demonstrated in each section of this Unit, that is, they will be applied to different sporting contexts and to the anatomical regions of Spine, Lower limb and Upper limb. On completion of this unit students should be able to:
1. Synthesise information from examination strategies including clinical tests, performance-related tests and medical investigations to formulate an initial diagnosis of the type and severity of injury or illness
2. Design and implement evidence based intervention programs to promote early and safe return to activity and progression to optimal function following injury.
3. Critically evaluate the scope of practice and expertise of other professionals, leading to appropriate referral and communication of information
4. Design and apply evidence based interventions to prevent injury and enhance performance
5. Evaluate progress and outcomes of intervention programs in relation to sport and exercise activities, including reviewed advice to the athlete and other professionals
6. Critically appraise the literature supporting methods of assessment and management.
Skills:
Knowledge and understanding (Taught, facilitated and assessed)
Sports injury diagnosis and management; Athlete biomechanics and sport and exercise movement patterns; injury prevention, acute intervention, rehabilitation and performance enhancement; multi-disciplinary research, theory and referral in sports physiotherapy.
Intellectual skills (Taught, facilitated and assessed)
Information appraisal and synthesis; self direction and originality in problem solving; reflection on learning and practice
Professional practical skills (Facilitated)
Safe sports physiotherapy practice; Support multi-disciplinary colleagues; reflective practice; rehabilitation programme design; advise athletes in different sporting contexts.
Key skills
Communication skills (Taught, facilitated and assessed)
Problem solving (Taught, facilitated and assessed)
Critically reflect on and develop practice (Taught, facilitated and assessed)
IT skills (Taught, facilitated and assessed)
Content:
This module addresses the prevention, diagnosis and management of injury from a Sports Physiotherapy perspective, incorporating multidisciplinary practice. It is divided into the study of three anatomical regions, each section bearing equal emphasis:
1. Spine
2. Lower Limb
3. Upper limb
Principles of history gathering, physical examination, differential diagnoses and rehabilitation to maximise performance, integrated with physiology, patho-physiology, interdisciplinary practice, medical imaging, motion analysis.
There is a particular focus on problem solving and clinical reasoning, and exploring the existing evidence to support management approaches.
Topic areas within each section will be applied to different clinical and athletic scenarios, demonstrating an iterative assessment / reasoning / evaluation approach to athlete management.
