Aims & Learning Objectives:
Aims - To provide an elementary introduction to the Calculus, including a review of foundations in algebra and geometry.
Objectives - Students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of and proficiency in: manipulation of simple algebraic expressions, the solution of simple algebraic equations and systems, trigonometric functions and identities and their use, the derivative of a function and the finding of derivatives, coordinate geometry and curve sketching including simple use of the second derivative, solution of maximization and minimization problems, the binomial theorem and its use.
Content:
Numbers: integers, rationals, reals. Algebra: straight lines, quadratics, functions, binomial theorem, exponential function. Trigonometry: ratios for general angles, sine and cosine rules, compound angles. Calculus: differentiation, tangents, normals, rates of change, maxima and minima.
