PA30169 Trends in molecular signalling

Credits: 6
Level: Honours
Semester: 2
Assessment: EX 100%
Requisites:
Before taking this unit you must take PA30142
Aims: The aim of this unit is to provide a knowledge base of recent developments in molecular signalling. In this unit, the introductory material provided in earlier units (PA20241) will be the basis for an in depth study of selected topics. The aim will be to develop a knowledge and understanding of specific topics encompassing cellular signalling events in different model systems.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit, the student should be able to: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the complex interactions which occur in cellular signalling events and how this knowledge can contribute to the identification of novel drug targets, give examples of the role of these targets in particular therapeutic areas and utilise a range of ICT and cognitive skills in acquiring knowledge and understanding and applying them to given situations.
Skills:
Scientific skills (T/F/A).
Study skills, handling information, working with others (T/F).
Problem solving (T/F).
Content:
An in-depth treatment of selected topics covering advances in molecular signalling, to include; protein interaction modules; kinase cascades; tyrosine kinases and phosphatases; lipid signalling; signalling events occurring in immune cells; Trp channels and sensory perception.
