Aims: To gain an understanding of the structure and operation of the pharmaceutical industry, to explore the role of pharmacists in industry and to analyse particular issues relating to pharmaceutical development and manufacturing processes.
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this Unit, the student will be able to : synthesise an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the structure of the global pharmaceutical industry, with emphasis on UK-based companies; analyse the roles of pharmacists in the industry, including regulatory affairs and critically evaluate particular issues relating to medicines development and manufacturing processes within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Skills: Critical appraisal skills (T/F/A) Study skills, handling information, working with others (T/F) Problem solving (T/F). Content: Structure of the global pharmaceutical industry, with guest lecturers from UK-based companies. The roles of pharmacists within industry, including involvement in Regulatory Affairs - the roles of the MHRA, the EMEA and the FDA. Selected topics from pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies covering aspects of pharmaceutical development and manufacture. Workshops will include utilising a computer aided learning programme which simulates the decision-making processes surrounding the development of a new medicine. |
