To impart a systematic understanding of the range of renewable and low carbon energy technologies at both large and small scales and their impact on and use in the built environment.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students will have deomonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the range of low and zero carbon energy technologies available and the ability to critically and systematically select suitable solutions for application in building projects.

Skills:
To critically and systematically analyse the energy needs of a building project and design for appropriate renewable or low carbon energy sources.

Content:
Renewable Energy Technologies:- Sources and exploitation. technologies, efficiencies and appropriate systems for Wind, Hydro, Wave, Tidal, Solar & Geothermal energy.
Low Carbon Energy Technologies:- The use and benefits of Biofuels, Ground Source heating & cooling, CHP & Tri-generation.
Demand Load Balancing:- The variable nature of renewables, the constant demand of consumers and the need for energy storage systems. Pumped Storage Hydro, Mine Compressed Air Storage, Hydrogen production & Fuel Cells.
