Click here for further information Description: Aims:
To allow students to experience a practical research project typical of research in an academic environment. To further develop and reinforce the skills necessary for research work.

Learning Outcomes:
After studying the Unit, students should be able to:
* Demonstrate advanced experimental techniques appropriate to the chosen project and develop them to a high level;
* Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of these techniques;
* Record experimental observations and data in an efficient manner;
* Present results in a variety of formats and place them in context of other researchers' work;
* Demonstrate a critical awareness of the scientific literature in relation to the chosen research areas;
* Demonstrate the ability to plan and conduct an experimental programme;
* Devise new hypotheses, and experiments to test these hypotheses;
* Demonstrate originaltiy in tackling and solving problems.

Skills:
Numeracy (F, A); Problem solving (T, F, A): Scientific writing (F, A); Independent working (F).

Content:
Two different research projects will be selected in conjunction with a supervising member of staff (one for each project) and a program of experimental work planned. In addition to the experimental aspects, appropriate library work will be conducted. Aspects of project planning, safety, report writing skills and oral presentations will be introduced and developed as appropriate.
