Students develop a broad understanding of the control mechanisms associated with goal-directed movement behaviour and how the application of evidence-based interventions can improve motor skill development; gain an appreciation of differing motor control theories from both motor programme and dynamical system perspectives; become familiar with issues related to the classification and measurement of motor skill, limiting factors to performance including attention and memory, and also, how the structure of practice and the manipulation of feedback can expedite motor skill proficiency.

Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this unit students will:
* Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the core concepts and applications within motor learning and motor control.
* Recall and explain the key differences between the motor program based and dynamic systems theories of motor control.
* Determine and apply various instruction and feedback methods, and critically evaluate their impact on skill learning.
* Design goal-specific practice conditions to accelerate the learning of skilled performance.
* Adapt acquired knowledge concerning the observation and evaluation of fundamental and applied motor skills to movement settings.

Skills:

* Comprehensive and scholarly written communication (e.g., essays) T/F/A
* Ability to select, summarise and synthesise written information from multiple sources F/A
* Ability to develop rigorous arguments through precise use of concepts and models F/A
* Ability to relate theory to practice T/A
* Ability to produce work to agreed specifications and deadlines F
* Ability to work independently F
