The intention of this unit is to:
* Enable students to gain an appreciation of the different stances adopted by a number of key psychological, social, and philosophical positions.
* Engage students in the reflection and critique of the practice of coaching by applying their knowledge of different theoretical positions.
* Provide an opportunity for students to apply a range of social and psychological theories to sport and coaching, thereby developing and improving their personal critical praxis.

Learning Outcomes:
Having studied this unit, students will be able to:
* Consider and recognise how different theoretical positions might influence our approach to coaching practice.
* Appreciate the value of critically reflecting upon practice in terms of enhancing continuing professional development.
* Increasingly recognise appropriate links between theory and practice.

Content:
The following topics will be covered:
(a) Freudian theory and psychodynamics and its implications for coaching.
(b) Trait theories of personality and their implications for coaching.
(c) Behaviourism and its implications for coaching.
(d) Humanism and its implications for coaching.
(e) The operation of the above positions in the philosophies of real-world coaches.
