The intention of this unit is to encourage students to further apply the contextual knowledges gained through engagement with the core sociocultural strand of the coach education and sport development degree. Specifically, the unit aims to:
* enable students to understand the sociological aspects of social problems in sport.
* develop the principles of learner-centered learning (LCL) among students.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit students should demonstrate:
* a critical understanding of the sociological aspects of key issues in sport, culture, and, coaching;
* an understanding of how social problems in sport are shaped by sociological forces, especially the media;
* a critical understanding of social and civic responsibility;
* a critical understanding of cultural diversity;
* an understanding of how to conduct research on social issues in sport, culture, and, coaching.

Skills:
On completion of the unit, students will have developed:
* the ability to collect, analyse and organise information and ideas and to convey those ideas clearly and fluently, in both written and spoken forms. T/F
* the ability to interact effectively with others in order to work towards a common outcome F
* the ability to generate ideas and adapt innovatively to changing environments F
* the ability to identify problems, create solutions, innovate and improve current practices F/A
* the ability to apply critical reasoning to issues through independent thought and informed judgement T/A
* the ability to evaluate opinions, make decisions and to reflect critically on the justifications for decisions T/A.

Content:
The lecture component will introduce students to basic concepts related to key social issues in sport, culture, and, coaching. A series of key social problems in sport, culture, and, coaching will be formulated from co-participatory generative discussion. In small groups, students will explore a specific social problem through in-depth investigation and workshop environments. The course will conclude with a series of poster presentations.
