Click here for further information Description: Aims:
To provide a basic understanding of the way in which electrical power systems, dc and ac electrical machines and power electronic devices operate.

Learning Outcomes:
After completing this unit students should be able to: describe the structure of a modern power system and its major components and perform simple 3-phase calculations; describe the construction, action and characteristics of transformers and dc, induction and synchronous machines and perform simple analyses; explain the basic operating principles and perform simple analyses of common power-electronic systems including line-frequency rectifiers, dc to dc converters and dc to ac inverters.

Skills:
Application of the information, techniques and methods discussed in the lectures, to the proposal of and the carrying through of appropriate solutions to engineering problems in power systems, electrical machines and power electronics. Taught, facilitated and tested.

Content:
Single and 3-phase transformers: construction, operation, connections, models. DC machines: construction, operation, connections, models, characteristics. Three-phase induction machines: construction, operation, equivalent circuits, characteristics. Three-phase synchronous machines: construction operation and action of round rotor type; equivalent circuits, phasor diagrams. Introduction to 3-phase theory. Power semiconductor devices; introduction to the conduction, switching characteristics and drive requirements of diodes, thyristors and power transistors. Line frequency power converters; introduction to single and three-phase rectifier circuits operating with resistive and inductive loads. dc to dc power converters; introduction to switched mode power supplies and the principles of operation of step-down and step-up converters.
