Click here for further information Description: Aims:
To introduce the various channels and associated problems in making finance available to the poor.
To illustrate the functioning of some of these channels by exploring the institutional and incentive structure.
To develop a conceptual framework which can be applied to the understanding of development finance.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit, students should be able to demonstrate:
* The ability to apply tools of economic analysis to key issues in development finance;
* An understanding of the operational aspects of various instruments and their efficiency implications.

Skills:
Ability to apply analytical tools and theoretical ideas to real issues.
Ability to critically read specialist articles in this area.
Ability to conduct preliminary research on selected topics and present the results in a coherent manner.

Content:
The two key areas of microfinance and foreign aid will constitute the bulk of the unit. The key texts are:
* The Economics of Microfinance by Armendariz de Aghion and Morduch (MIT Press 2005)
* The Institutional Economics of Foreign Aid by Martens et.al. (CUP, 2002).
