The aim of this unit is:
* To provide students with the training to undertake advanced level research.
* To enable students to locate and critically evaluate appropriate literature for a dissertation.
* To develop skills in obtaining and organising suitable data.
* Ability to identify and critically reflect upon appropriate analytical techniques.
* To introduce students to current empirical and theoretical research in economics and finance.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students will have developed a comprehensive understanding of how to formulate and develop an original research question. They will have developed a systematic and analytical understanding of bibliographic searches, data collection, quantitative and qualitative research design.

Skills:
Ability to formulate a research question. (T/F)
Ability to analyse and manage data and conduct appropriate bibliographical searches. (T/F)
To demonstrate how statistical methods and relevant theory can be applied in the context of specific problems. (T/F)

Content:
Part I of the unit which consist of an understanding of the overall design of research. Topics covered include: searching for appropriate literature, sources of economic and financial data, research ethics, design and administration of questionnaires, working with survey data, plagiarism, acknowledging sources and referencing conventions, finding a supervisor and managing the dissertation process.
Part II of the unit will be based on applications of advanced principles, concepts and methods to introduce students to a range of current empirical and theoretical research economics and finance. This will be delivered through a series of guest lectures where some members of the department (including, where appropriate, visiting professors and / or research fellows will showcase their areas of expertise.
