Driven by a process of identifying personal professional needs and development of a reflective practice logbook, the aim of this Unit is to provide the student with an opportunity to assess and develop their experience and professional skills by the application and implementation of information governance in their professional practice. This process is continued in Information Governance in Practice II for students studying to Diploma or Masters level.

Learning Outcomes:
Knowledge and Understanding
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Critically analyse the theoretical knowledge of information governance
* Apply information governance knowledge and understanding to specific work base issues
* Critically assess the information governance needs of an organisation
* Understand the planning and implementation of information governance
* Develop and assess the monitoring procedures for information Governance at an organisational level.
* Understand the role of the Information Governance Toolkit in an organisation and how the organisation can meet these requirements
* Critically analyse the role of information governance at a national level
These learning outcomes will be taught and assessed.

Skills:
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
* Apply general theoretical knowledge to specific instances
* Undertake a risk assessment for Information Governance
* Develop and undertake an Information Governance strategy and implementation plan
* Develop, implement and monitor key information governance strategies, polices and processes.
* Plan and manage their learning through reflecting on and analysing their own learning needs.
* Integrate and critically evaluate information gathered from a wide range of resources including the unit resources, text books, journal articles, web pages and other online resources. An appreciation for a hierarchy of evidence should be displayed.
* Communicate effectively with colleagues and tutors including through asynchronous online discussions.
These learning outcomes will be facilitated and some may be assessed.

Content:
This Unit enables the practical application of theoretical knowledge of information governance in a healthcare setting and is taken concurrently with the study of the other sequential units. Study activities within Information Governance in Practice I will be scheduled to correspond to study in other units and reflect the increasing knowledge and expertise gained over time.
Information Governance in Practice develops practitioner-based skills delivered through work-based experiences, online case-based discussions and face-to-face courses, to include consideration and application of the following:
* Information Governance Toolkit - The role of the Information Governance Toolkit in the NHS.
* Information Governance Manager-role and responsibilities and how this is integrated into the wider organisational structure
* Case reviews - Examining Information Governance case, issues and incidents and the impact on the organisation
* Wider Legislation - Placing Information Governance in a wider legislative context.
* Information Governance Audit - Examining the need for an information governance audit and how this can be implemented.
