Click here for further information Description: Aims:
To introduce advanced knowledge and skills appropriate to a general practitioner with special interest (GPwSI) in musculoskeletal problems seen in primary care consultations.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an advanced competence in history, examination and assessment of the musculoskeletal system (taught, facilitated and assessed)
2. Demonstrate a higher level of competence in reaching a differential diagnosis on complex presenting problems in general practice (taught, facilitated and assessed)
3. Integrate and critically evaluate evidence presented in appropriate literature in reaching a differential diagnosis (taught, facilitated and assessed)
4. Demonstrate a critical knowledge of appropriate referrals for imaging and an ability to interpret image results for X-rays and DXA scans (taught, facilitated and assessed)
5. Use joint and soft tissue injection therapy competently and safely (taught, facilitated and assessed)
6. Competently diagnose and manage common inflammatory conditions (taught, facilitated and assessed)
7. Critically evaluate the evidence base to demonstrate competence in pain management and neuropathic pain (taught, facilitated and assessed)
8. Demonstrate competence in the diagnosis of vasculitis, connective tissue disorder and juvenile arthritis (taught, facilitated and assessed)
9. Demonstrate an advanced competence in the assessment and management of musculoskeletal conditions associated with the spine and neck (taught, facilitated and assessed).

Skills:
On completion of this unit students will be able to:
* demonstrate an advanced clinical examination of the musculoskeletal system
* present clinical assessments effectively to colleagues orally and through written communication
* communicate effectively with colleagues, peers and tutors
* identify, collect and reflect upon evidence to demonstrate professional practice in primary care
