To provide a structured and supported opportunity for students to enhance their professional practice in primary care by undertaking a small scale action research enquiry.

Learning Outcomes:
After completing a Practice Enquiry students will be able to:
* develop further small-scale research enquiries relevant to their own or others� professional development needs in primary care;
* incorporate research, audit and inspection evidence into the design of such enquiries in an appropriately critical and balanced way;
* involve students and/or colleagues within such enquiries in an appropriately professional way;
* evaluate the process and outcomes of such enquiries, drawing constructive conclusions for the improvement of clinical and professional practices.

Content:
Students will undertake a small scale independent action research enquiry designed to improve an aspect of their professional practice in primary care They will be required to design the enquiry, organise the process and identify and evaluate the outcomes. By undertaking a critical analytical reflection on the process of the enquiry, they will gain an enhanced understanding of their own professional learning. As part of their studies they will be required to critically analyse key theoretical concepts relevant to the aspect of their practice that they are seeking to improve through their action research enquiry. Students will negotiate the focus of their enquiry with the unit tutor and a practice colleague, such as a GP Partner, as appropriate. The Unit tutor will provide guidance on the organisation of the process, the identification and evaluation of the outcomes and the literature relevant to the focus of the enquiry. Detailed, specific guidance and advice is given in the student handbook pertaining to the structure, requirements and scope of an appropriate MSc level enquiry project.
