To provide the basic groundwork in control theory and its application for the evaluation of electrohydraulic systems.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to design and predict the behaviour of practical control systems involving hydraulic actuation, analyse the stability, and apply compensation of such systems.

Skills:
Problem solving; numeracy; working independently and in groups.

Content:
System modelling, PID control, block diagrams, frequency response, bode diagrams, stability criteria, valve drive amplifiers, dynamics of valve operated actuator, hydro-mechanical position control, electrohydraulic position control, advanced control techniques, use of Matlab/Simulink for system modelling and controller design.
