Click here for further information Description: Aims:
To broaden the understanding of Solid Mechanics by considering the analysis of thick cylinders, the bending of circular plates, the effect that temperature gradient and centrifugal force have on stresses in circular components and to study multi-bolt joints.
To show how material nonlinearity, in the form of elastic-plastic behaviour, can result in yielding in pressure vessel and beam bending applications, and hence be analysed.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Calculate stresses and deformations in thick cylinders due to a variety of loading conditions including interference fits.
* Understand the nature of plastic yielding in relation to pressure vessels and beams in bending. Determine Shape Factors and Load Factors for common engineering beams and sections and be capable of calculating the collapse load and residual stresses in yielded components.
* Consider the effect that rotation and temperature gradient have on the stress distributions and deformation of discs and shafts.
* Analyse multi-bolt joints under bending and torsion loading conditions, understand the effect that tightening torque has on joint efficiency and know what is meant by a friction grip joint.
* Determine stresses and deflections in laterally loaded circular plates under a variety of loading and support arrangements.

Skills:
Problem solving: numeracy; working independently.

Content:
Stresses and deformation of pressurised thick cylinders. Yield criteria, section shape factor and collapse load of beams in bending. Linear bending theory for circular plates. Rotation of thin discs. Analysis of bolted joints and the effect of torque tightening.
