To illustrate the totality of the product development process, from concept design, through design iteration, to detailed design.
To allow synthesis of information and skills from within other parts of the undergraduate programme and from external sources.
To improve effective communication of a major piece of design project work.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Plan project work and conduct the various stages of a design project, which may include: iterative design development, research activities, parts procurement, test development, contacting experts, etc.
* Present the results of a design project via written documentation, proof of principle prototypes, oral presentations and detailed design drawings.

Skills:
Problem solving; written communication; oral communication; IT; working independently; entrepreneurship.

Content:
Entry to this unit is dependent upon satisfactory completion of Specialist Design Project I. Students continue the work initially started in this previous unit under the guidance of a supervisor and are encouraged to produce documentary evidence of their design progress. Students must organise weekly meetings with their supervisor. Three peer-groups meetings are organised through the semester where students are required to contribute and support each other's design progress. In week 9 students present their proof-of-principle prototype which demonstrates the design solution (or parts there of) and are subject to a viva. In week 11, the final report covering the whole project is handed in. Detail design drawings are expected in the appendices. In weeks 12 and 13 the final seminars are held and posters are submitted.
