Click here for further information Description: Aims:
Enable students to articulate objectively and subjectively meaningful career investments with an understanding of the contemporary context of careers. The pragmatic focus is for students to develop appropriate knowledge and skills in preparation for recruitment by employers for the Period of Professional Practice and beyond. The delivery is based on contemporary career theory with its emphasis on individuals taking responsibility for their professional development and learning.

Learning Outcomes:
Students will develop knowledge and understanding of career theories; be able to identify key issues and analyse these critically; gain ideas and approaches to reflect on their own life and career choices. Through a range of activities and assignments, students will explore individually and with others how they can bring skills and expertise (knowing how), relationships (knowing whom), and values (knowing why) to their working life in and through organizations. Activities include: Learning Needs Analysis and a Personal Development Plan (which will explicitly draw on relevant career theory); Developing skills and knowledge relevant to graduate level job search process.

Ability to express coherently the link between career objectives and personal criteria of career success, in particular with regards to personal motives and skills. (T, A)
Ability to identify own learning needs and consider a wider spectrum of resources for self-directed professional development.(T,F,A)
Ability to set appropriate learning outcomes as part of the Personal Development Plan; (T,F,A)
Ability to develop coherent arguments with reference to academic literature. (T, F, A)
Ability to engage in critical self-reflectivity based on interpersonal/group discussions, empirical research and engagement with literature. (F,A)
CV writing; interviewing skills including the ability to give and receive information. (F,A)

Content:
The meaning of traditional and 'boundaryless' career perspectives within a knowledge-oriented global economy. From occupational choice to career investments. The role of self-directed learning and adaptability in a changing world of work. Activities include: Group and individual career exploration activities enabling students to develop self-awareness about meaningful career choices; Personal Development Plan; CV Writing and Covering Letters, Application Forms, Interview Skills, Aptitude tests, Assessment Centres, Mock Interview Preparation Session. Students will also be introduced to relevant scholarly literature.
