The aim of this unit is to allow the student to gain practical experience in the design, implementation and interpretation of microbiological experiments.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this Unit the student should be able to:
* Design microbiological experiments
* Carry out microbiological experiments
* Interpret microbiological experiments
* Experience modern molecular biology techniques.

Skills:
Study skills, handling information, working with others (T/F/A)
Communication skills (T/F/A)
Cognitive skills (T/F/A).

Content:
The unit will be based around an extended microbiological experiment. The students will work in groups and collaborate in the design of experiments and the collection of data. However each student will use the data to produce an independent report and also an independent poster presentation. The subject matter of the experiment(s) will vary from year to year but will always include an element of traditional microbiology, e.g. determination of antibiotic sensitivity, and an element of molecular biology applied to microbiology, e.g. handling and characterising plasmids.
