Click here for further information Description: Aims:
To learn about (a) non-oral routes of drug delivery, (b) advanced drug delivery systems (c) delivery of biopharmaceuticals and (d) integration of physiology with dosage forms and pharmacokinetics.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit the student will be able to:
1. Compare and contrast the non-oral routes of drug delivery (nasal, pulmonary, vaginal, sublingual, buccal, topical and transdermal). Analyze which route of administration is more appropriate for a given drug therapy. Evaluate the requirements imposed to medicines by the desired route of administration.
2. Compare and contrast the dosage forms used to deliver drugs via the non-oral routes of drug delivery. Examine the key technology parameters involved in their formulation and performance.
3. Evaluate and differentiate advanced drug delivery systems: oral (enteric, delayed and controlled release), implantable, and liposome, nanoparticle - based medicines.
4. Analyse the challenges involved in delivery biopharmaceuticals.
5. Illustrate how disease and drug interactions modifies drug pharmacokinetics
6. Integrate physiology with dosage forms performance.

1. The nasal and pulmonary routes of drug delivery. Related dosage forms: Inhalers.
2. Other routes of drug delivery: vaginal, sublingual, buccal.
3. The transdermal and topical route of drug delivery. Related dosage forms.
4. Advanced oral delivery systems: enteric, delayed and controlled DDS
5. Advanced parenteral drug delivery systems. Implantable dosage forms
6. Targeted drug delivery systems.
7. Biopharmaceuticals: peptides, proteins, vaccines, antibodies, gene and DNA
8. Effect of disease and drug interaction on pharmacokinetics.
9. Integration: physiology, dosage form and pharmacokinetics.
