To introduce students to the structure, growth and replication of microorganisms and provide an insight into the infectious diseases some can cause.
To provide training in basic laboratory skills routinely encountered in microbiological experiments.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this Unit, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of microbial structure, growth and replication. They should appreciate the beneficial and detrimental effects of microorganisms on the human body, understand the determinants required for microorganisms to cause infectious disease, be able to name some pathogenic organisms responsible of common bacterial infections and recognise the principles of clinical diagnosis. They should be able to carry out basic practical microbiological techniques competently and safely and apply these laboratory skills to future aspects of the degree programme.

Skills:
Working with others (T/F)
Study skills, problem solving (T/F/A)
Handling information (T/F/A)
Scientific and practical skills (T/F/A)

Content:
Introduction to microbiology: basic nomenclature, bacterial cell structure, Gram-positive and Gram-negative cell walls, bacterial nutrition, growth and replication. Diagnosing infection. Indigenous human microflora, bacterial pathogenesis, determinants of disease. Introduction to viruses: basic structure and replication. Practical microbiology.
