| Description:
| Aims: To enable the MPharm student to understand the professional context in which pharmacy is taught. To enable the MPharm student to have an appreciation of graduate outcomes required by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), and to start developing a continuing professional development (CPD) portfolio to enable to student to demonstrate these outcomes upon eventual graduation. To introduce the student to methods of individual and group learning and assessment, including library and web-based resources. To introduce the student to safe laboratory practice, basic concepts of experimental error and structured laboratory report writing. Learning Outcomes: At the end of the unit the student should be able to: 1. Reflect on personal CPD needs and have started to maintain a learning portfolio to support graduate outcomes required by the General Pharmaceutical Council 2. have an awareness of the professional responsibilities of the pharmacist, and the roles of pharmacy supporting staff 3. organise effective notes; 4. demonstrate use of library and appropriate computing facilities in the University to research and to write essays and laboratory reports in a scientific style; 5. calculate basic statistical distributions and summarise data. Skills: Study skills, planning & organisation, handling information (T/F/A) Written communication (T/F/A) Information and communication technology (T/F/A) Problem solving (T/F/A) Scientific and practical skills (T/F/A). Content: Professional orientation and introduction to the role of the pharmacist and pharmacy support staff. Regulation of pharmacy and pharmacy education. Professionalism. The place of experiential learning in the MPharm programme. Introduction to pharmacy ethics. Key skills including effective study and note taking. Continuing professional development, and the CPD cycle. Reflective writing. Presentation skills. Introduction to University computer facilities. Use of electronic communications, the library and bibliographic searches. Basic word-processing and spreadsheet use. Statistical distributions, calculation of mean, median, variance, regression. Use of statistical software. |
