Click here for further information Description: Aims:
To provide a thorough grounding in the various research methods and methodologies, and planning techniques that are used in practice-based research; To select and use appropriate methodologies in the design and organisation of an independent research project.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the Unit students will be able to:
1. Differentiate/discriminate between the different types of research techniques available to the health professional and make judgements about their use in particular practice contexts (knowledge and understanding; intellectual skills);
2. Critically evaluate the role of research in pharmacy practice and health services research (intellectual skills);
3. Identify and design a small scale practice-based research project including the preparation of a project plan (knowledge and understanding, professional and practical; transferable key skills);
4. Evaluate the ethical issues involved in undertaking research in practice and successfully complete the procedure for seeking ethical approval for research in their particular practice context (knowledge and understanding, intellectual skills).

Introduction to Research Methods: The research question
Qualitative Research Methods
Quantitative Research Methods (including a basic review of statistics)
Pharmacy practice and health services research
The relationship with evidence-based practice and critical appraisal - how research informs practice
Ethical issues in research and ethical approval of research.
