| Aims: To explore a range of key research designs and methods which can be used to collect data to inform and deliver enhanced practice in health. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit participants will be able to: 1. Evaluate national and organisational priorities for research and critically appraise opportunities for programmatic and other research (intellectual skills, professional skills, key skills; taught, facilitated) 2. Formulate appropriate research questions suitable for conducting research in and on practice and create and critically review a research protocol (intellectual skills, practical skills, key skills; taught, facilitated and assessed) 3. Select appropriate research designs and methods from a range of available approaches and critically defend their use in a range of practice research contexts (including qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches (intellectual skills, practical skills, key skills; taught, facilitated and assessed)) 4. Design a small-scale research project which is based in practice (intellectual skills, professional skills, practical skills, key skills; taught, facilitated and assessed) 5. Practice a range of skills of a competent researcher, including presentation (oral and poster); networking for interdisciplinarity; ethical review of research; project planning techniques, etc. (intellectual skills, professional skills, practical skills, key skills; taught, facilitated and assessed).
