To analyse major literary and artistic movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries whose theories are fundamental to contemporary cultural thought; to develop the comparative study of literary and artistic genres; to explore the nature of visual representations, including art, film, and photography.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
* demonstrate an understanding of literary and visual images in the modern period;
* analyse and account for the shifting relationship between visual and literary images;
* compare and contrast an appropriate range of literary and artistic theories.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning and language skills are developed in this unit.

Content:
A comparative analysis of the work of selected writers, artists, and filmmakers within the modern period which may include: Apollinaire, Braque, Butor, Cézanne, Clair, Duchamp, Leger, Magritte, Manet, Matisse, Michaud, Monet, Picasso, Proust, Seurat.
