The unit aims to prepare students for the study of international relations through an examination of the history of relations between states and of international conflict in Europe and the wider world in the 19th and 20th centuries. A second aim is to help first-year students improve basic seminar and essay skills.

Learning Outcomes:
Students who have successfully completed this unit will have:
* a knowledge of the major developments in world history since the early 19th century, focusing initially on relations amongst European states and between these states and the wider world;
* an understanding of how nation states sought to ensure their security and achieve their objectives in the international arena in this period;
* gained insight into the principal sources of international conflict in this period and of attempts to reduce or prevent it;
* developed important basic skills in academic oral and written communication.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning are developed in this unit.

Content:
Lectures and seminars will cover international history 1815-1991, including: European security 1815-1880, Imperialism 1860-1914, the First World War, European security 1919-1939, Global security 1919-1939, the Second World War, the Cold War, the Middle East after 1945, Decolonization in Asia and Africa, the end of the Cold War.
