This unit will explore the efforts in contemporary Spain to come to terms with the mass killing carried out by the Franco regime between 1936 and 1952. Its aims are:
* to provide an introduction and overview of some of the main debates and controversies surrounding the nature of the mass killing of non-combatants associated with the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939);
* to examine critically the impact of the violence upon Spanish society;
* to explore the way Spanish society has tried to come to terms with the violence.

Learning Outcomes:
Students who successfully complete this unit will:
* have the ability to analyse the main academic and scholarly debates on the causes and nature of the violence;
* be able to assess critically the impact of the violence upon Spanish society;
* be capable of evaluating the efforts made by Spanish society to come to terms with the violence.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, teamwork.

Content:
Lectures, seminars and presentations will cover the following main topics:
Introduction to the course, the origins of the Civil War violence behind the line, repression in the Civil War, repression in the postwar period, repression of the guerrilla movement, violence in the Republican zone, the Francoist memory of the violence, the transition to democracy, the memory movement, the exhumation movement, , the Law of Historical Memory, the case of Baltasar Garzón, comparisons with Argentina and Chile, the documentary Death in El Valle, TV documentary on the children kidnapped by the Franco regime, the film La caza, the novel Soldados de Salamina.
