Click here for further information Description: Aims:
The intention of this unit is to:
* To introduce the students to the different mental health disorders in childhood and adolescence;
* To introduce the students to a range of clinical interventions used to treat a variety of childhood and adolescence mental health disorders.

Learning Outcomes:
In completing this unit students would be expected to:
* Critically evaluate a number of models of developmental Psychopathology;
* Critically examine concepts of abnormality, diagnostic systems frequently used to classify mental health disorders in childhood and adolescence;
* Assess and evaluate a number of clinical interventions used in the treatment of developmental psychopathologies in childhood and adolescence;
* Discuss the causes and treatment of a variety of developmental psychopathologies in childhood and adolescence including attachment disorders, childhood anxiety;
* Compare and contrast the psychological, social, and biological perspectives in developmental psychopathologies in childhood and adolescence.

* Comprehensive and scholarly written communication (e.g. essays) [e.g. F/A]
* Concise, time-bound and effective written communication (e.g. briefings / exams)
* Ability to select, summarise and synthesis written information from multiple sources
* Ability to develop rigorous arguments through precise use of concepts and models
* Ability to apply theory into practice
* Ability to select and use appropriate ideas to produce a coherent response to a pre-set question
* Ability to produce work to agreed specifications and deadlines
* Ability to work independently, without close supervision of guidance.

Content:

* Describe and evaluate a number of models of developmental psychopathology
* In the unit we will discuss a number of different developmental psychopathologies (eg Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Childhood anxiety, attachment disorders, conduct disorders)
* Evaluate different explanations of developmental psychopathologies.
* Examining biological explanations, social cultural explanations and sociocognitive explanations
* Discuss issues concerned with the diagnosis and identification of childhood disorders.
* Critically evaluate clinical intervention used to treat these childhood disorders.
