Follow this link for further information on unit content Description: Aims & Learning Objectives:
To provide an introduction to the theory and practice of modern neutron scattering as applied to chemical systems. After studying this Unit, students should be able to:
* Define and describe scattering parameters for neutrons.
* Describe typical neutron scattering experimental set-up.
* Discuss the use of isotopic substitution and contrast variation.
* Discuss and detailed analysis of small angle scattering data.
* Discuss and detailed analysis of neutron scattering from interfaces.
* Study a recent neutron experiment from literature.

Content:
Introduction: Why neutrons? Scattering theory. Properties of the neutron and production of high fluxes. Experimental detail - neutron spectrometers. Detection of neutrons. Coherent and Incoherent scattering. Elastic and inelastic scattering. Small Angle scattering. Neutron reflection.
