Content:
The unit begins by critically engaging with the global policy context to include consideration of the 'Education for All' (Jomptien/Dhaka) goals, the EFA Global Monitoring report and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The unit then considers the different perspectives influencing childhood policies and practices (such as developmental, human rights, political, economic, social and cultural perspectives). An introduction is then given to key issues of marginalisation (child labour, street children, conflict and war, child refugees, child trafficking, etc.) that millions of children experience globally and how these link with education, particularly non-formal education initiatives. Throughout the unit the relationship between democracy, education and learning is theorised. This relationship is highlighted in the following unit topics: education for social change in a global context; participation in formal schooling and out of schooling contexts; citizenship and the idea of global citizenship education.
