| Aims: The aim of this unit is to help students integrate into the academic environment and to raise the level of their degree work. Learning Outcomes: Having completed this unit students will be better able to: * Listen at length * Identify the main ideas in a lecture * Make useful notes from a lecture * Summarise a lecture * Prepare, plan and deliver an oral presentation * Evaluate a presentation * Invite questions and create thinking time for the answer * Ask a lecturer or presenter questions * Identify weaknesses in their pronunciation, and understand how to rectify them. Skills: Having completed this unit students will be better able to: * Engage an audience * Adopt appropriate body language when giving a presentation * Use technical visual aids when giving a presentation * Understand the principles of time management when giving a presentation * Cope with nerves, equipment failure etc. when giving a presentation. Content: Listening to lectures: * Purpose * Prediction * Listening for main ideas/relevant information * Note-taking/reconstitution of notes * Summarising/using the summary to explain * Listening at length * Listening problems Presentation skills: * Preparation * Planning and structuring the talk * The stages of a talk * Visual aids * Delivery (including intonation, body language etc) * Dealing with questions and answers * Trouble-shooting Pronunciation: * Intonation * Chunking * Stress * linking. |
