The course aims to consolidate language already acquired, for example in Stage 3 Semester 1, and to encourage students to extend their active and passive vocabulary, to improve accuracy and the complexity of the language used, to increase their confidence in using the target language for spontaneous responses. The course aims to help students access increasingly more demanding reading and listening material.
On completion of the course students will be able to
* Give clear detailed descriptions and presentations on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest expanding and supporting ideas with subsidiary points and examples
* Understand the gist and some detail of recorded or broadcast audio material on topics of personal and general interest and on current affairs when the delivery is relatively slow and clear and delivered in standard dialect
* Access more demanding authentic texts with the help of a dictionary
* Produce short descriptive and narrative texts, and write formal and informal letters.

More complex language structures are introduced, such as the conditional. Reading and listening material on new topic areas will help students extend their passive vocabulary. Topics of general interest and cultural relevance will be discussed, helping students to express and dispute opinions and to encourage spontaneous responses.
