Description: | Aims: Students will be introduced to the concepts and theories of human resource management (HRM) and explore contemporary policy developments and management practice from the perspective of the organisation and the employee. Learning Outcomes: After completing this unit the student will be able to: * Understand what is meant by Strategic Human Resource Management; * Understand the contribution of HRM to organisational performance; * Identify and understand the core elements of HRM practice; * Describe and analyse both content and context for these sets of HR practices; * Apply HR models to various sectors; * Critically assess the value of theoretical HRM models. Skills: Key skills: * Understanding of theory and practice and critical debates (taught and assessed) * Use theory to analyse case studies (taught and facilitated) * Application of concepts and models to practical situations (taught and facilitated). Content: Key topics covered include: strategic HRM - development and main models; analysing the links between HRM and organisational performance; external and internal resourcing; training, development and talent management; performance management,; remuneration and reward; employee engagement. Although the course will focus on HRM from a UK perspective, aspects of international and comparative HRM will be introduced throughout the course. |
