Description: | Aims: To provide an introduction to the processes of organization and individual (career) development through different theoretical perspectives, including a knowledge-based perspective. To explore the role of leadership, management and employee development at an organizational and individual level. To link the theory of organisational development and change to the practice of improving organisational performance. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit the student would be able to: * Provide a framework for analysis and understanding of current thinking in organizational and career development; * Understand the nature and contribution of knowledge, learning and development to organisational development and success; * Consider organisational context in planning organisational change, and give practical examples; * Appreciate the role and responsibilities of the organization and the individual in training and development; * To understand the role of learning in career development; * Differentiate between employee, management and leadership development; * Make suggestions for creative and innovative approaches to adult learning, and how this could form part of a programme for change; * Evaluate systematically organisational interventions, considering the links between environment, strategy and HR Development policy and practice; * Develop a critical understanding of the relationship between organisational and individual (career) development. Skills: Analysis of case material (taught) Critical reflection on theory, relevant to their own research (taught) Application of theoretical models (taught) Conversations with practitioners (facilitated) Design of a learning intervention (taught and facilitated) Cooperative working with other students (facilitated) Integration of multiple levels of analysis - short-term/long-term, individual/organisational, theory/practice Content: The nature of Organization and Career Development; Theories of organization; Analysing organisational context during change; The role of knowledge, training and development in organisations at individual (career) and collective levels; The process of organisational learning; Theories and practice of learning; Career development and succession-planning; The training and development cycle, including methodologies for need assessment, evaluation and feedback; Putting it all together - Organization Development in Practice; Using internal and external consultants. |
