Description: | Aims: Students will be introduced to advanced level concepts, theories and examples of the international dimensions of organisational behaviour, using a range of related concepts, theories and examples. Through lectures, group work and readings, they will develop an in-depth appreciation of the critical factors that influence individual behaviour and social relations in multinational corporations (MNCs) and other forms of international organisations. More specifically, students will develop an understanding of the strategies, structures, processes, policies and practices that enable the more or less successful management of organisational, group and individual level dynamics in an international context. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, the student should be able to: * display a systematic understanding of approaches to international dimensions of organisational behaviour and management * relate academic debates and multidimensional ideas on globalisation, international organisation and management across national borders; * appraise models and evidence critically using a variety of skills and competencies obtained in earlier study; * determine to what extent and in what way the international environment shapes the organisational dynamics in multinational firms and organisations; * conceptualise and demonstrate key concepts relevant to management and organisation in an international context; * analyse and provide examples of organisational policies and practices, relating text to real life scenarios and problems; * evaluate and interpret new information and theory, engage in problem solving, demonstrate ability to think logically, critically and practically. Skills: Intellectual skills: * facility to apply subject-specific knowledge to a range of complex organisational and international business situations (TFA); * critical awareness of current issues and frameworks in management and organisational bhaviour (FA); * understanding of theoretical concepts and frameworks that enable meaningfully and critically to link theory and practice (TFA); Practical skills: * deal with complex issues and make sound judgements in the absence of complete information, and to communicate conclusions clearly and competently (FA); * work effectively within cross-cultural groups and assume leadership roles where appropriate (F); * communicate and manage effectively in cross-cultural contexts (TF) Transferable skills: * ability to develop a holistic perspective on organisational dynamics in firms operating in different locations (TFA); * ability to develop a deeper appreciation of multiple and overlapping tensions of managing people and organisational processes globally (TFA); * appreciation and in-depth understanding of management practices required for successful operation in international contexts (TA); (Inter)Personal: * communicating, including presenting and promoting their ideas; preparing and producing effective analyses (F); * verbal reasoning (F); * self motivation (F); * cooperative working with other students (F); * debating and appreciating the views of others (F) Content: The unit covers the core themes and perspectives in international management and organisation. The unit consists of two analytical sections: �the international context of organisation�, where the content will cover issues relevant to the international environment and strategic orientation of organisations in a globalised economy; and �the organisational dynamics and behaviours�, where the content will cover issues relating to the management of people and social relations in international organisations. |
