To develop a knowledge of physiology, pathology and pharmacology of the autonomic, renal and cardiovascular systems and an understanding of the underlying concepts of the action of drugs on these systems.

Learning Outcomes:
Students successfully completing this unit will demonstrate an ability to present and interpret the basic principles of the action of drugs on these systems.

Content:
Overview of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Pharmacology of parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of the ANS and physiological effects of stimulation of the ANS. Pharmacology of the skeletal neuromuscular junction. Renal physiology and pharmacology. Mechanism of action of diuretic drugs. Control of blood pressure and cardiac output. Pharmacology and physiology of the heart. Mechanisms of cardiac excitation, contraction and relaxation. Mechanisms of action of drugs used in treatment of cardiovascular diseases: hypertension, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction.
