Follow this link for further information on unit content Description: Aims:
This unit will consider the development of the Federal Republic, a state which has often been described as a political, economic and cultural success story in comparison with previous attempts to build a peaceful and prosperous German democracy. The unit will examine the reasons for that success, but also look at the internal tensions which marked this development between 1949 and 1989, examining both their political and cultural manifestations.

Learning Outcomes:
Students who complete the unit will be able to:
* understand the history of the Federal Republic, its development as a state and the reasons for its success
* understand the political system in the Federal Republic and the challenges which West German democracy faced in this period
* understand the role of the different political parties in the Federal Republic
* analyse the causes of the 'economic miracle' and the economic challenges the Federal Republic subsequently faced
* analyse the ways in which the Federal Republic sought to deal with the challenges posed by the student movement and by left-wing terrorism after 1968
* understand the Federal Republic's place in Europe and the wider world
* understand the importance of the Federal Republic's relations with the German Democratic Republic.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit.

Content:
Students will examine the founding of the Federal Republic, the social, political and economic order of the Federal Republic, the challenges to that order that emerged before unification, and the Federal Republic's foreign relations, particularly focused on Europe and the GDR. Further, students will discuss films and literary texts (3 in total) which facilitate greater understanding of these issues.
