Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To introduce the principles and some applications of advanced radiation sources (synchrotron and neutron) in condensed matter studies.

Learning Outcomes:
After studying the Unit, students should be able to:
* Describe the use of synchrotron and neutron radiation sources for the study of condensed matter materials
* Describe the processes for producing useable radiation beams at these sources
* Critically assess the use of various experimental techniques (esp. diffraction) at these sources and evaluate their utility on various experimental situations
* Solve problems using the techniques introduced including the application of techniques to unseen situations.

Skills:
Problem solving (T, F, A), Scientific writing (F, A), Independent working (F), Group working (F).

Content:
Part 1 - Towards Synchrotron Radiation: Basics of scattering of X-rays and neutrons by materials; X-ray Sources; The synchrotron; The characteristics of synchrotron radiation. Part 2 - Synchrotron radiation instrumentation: Beamlines; instrument suites; general beamline layout; Beamline components; Detectors; detection of X-rays; area detectors; Examples of instruments.
