The intention of this unit is to:
* introduce students to key historical concepts with regard to education, childhood and schooling;
* introduce students to sociological theories of childhood and the relationship between images of childhood and the provision of schooling;
* familiarise students with research into children's perspectives of school life.

Learning Outcomes:
In completing this unit students would be expected to:
* have an understanding of sociological theories of childhood and an awareness of historical and contemporary debates about the nature of childhood;
* have an historical overview of the school in society and its relationship to changing views of childhood;
* have an awareness of the diversity of provision including both formal and informal contexts for education and schooling;
* have an awareness of different cultures of schooling in terms of systems, policies and histories;
* identify key issues arising from research into children's perspectives of schooling;
* consider how conceptions of childhood map onto notions of adolescence and youth.

Content:

* Definitions of childhood, adolescence and youth
* Historical perspectives and images of childhood in society - the changing natures of roles and responsibilities and their impact on formal and informal learning
* The distinction between education and schooling and the purposes of schooling
* Historical perspectives of the purposes of school in society
* The relationship between changing views of childhood (and dev / soc Psychology) and changes in approaches to schooling. (E.g. the rise of industrialisation gave rise to need for standard workers, gave rise to norms, gave rise to deviation from norms gave rise to special schooling; Eugenics movement plus mass migration into USA gave rise to dev of screening tests (IQ) to select best genetic stock.
* The romantic notion of childhood and its flourish in 60s & 70s gave rise to progressive school movement
* The comparative context/cultures of schooling - how other countries view schooling -, different cultures of and how their views of childhood are manifest in their systems , policies and histories
* Children’s perspectives: how do children see schooling and education.
* Education and schooling - different cultures of schooling -the comparative context , systems, policies and histories; children's perspectives and the pupils' voice.
