Description: | Aims: The aim of this unit is to solve advanced problems from the real world by calling on knowledge from areas which are generally taught separately in the Physics curriculum. The unit aims to develop analytical problem solving skills and a deeper level of overall understanding. Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit the student should be able to: * confidently apply knowledge of Mechanics, Vibrations and Waves, Thermal Physics, Electromagnetism and Quantum Theory to solving real world problems; * apply systematic methods to general problem solving, such as developing physical imagery to link physical intuition and logical reasoning; * make and justify good approximations in calculations. Skills: Written Communication T/F A, Numeracy T/F A, Information Technology T/F A, Problem Solving T/F A, Working as part of a group T/F A. Content: Topical problems: Mechanics; Vibrations and Waves; Electromagnetism; Thermal Physics. Long problems: Surface tension of water; Incandescent lamp (2 parts); Dipole-dipole interactions and van der Waals forces; Formation of interstellar hydrogen. |
