Description: | Aims: This is an interdisciplinary unit which will explore the Second World War and Europe, focusing on strategy, politics and society. The unit will: * provide an introduction and overview of some of the main debates and controversies surrounding the Second World War and its legacy for Europe; * critically examine the nature and impact of WW2 on Europe; * explore the meaning and implications of the war in terms of its military strategy and operations; and its impact on social change and political identity. Learning Outcomes: Students who successfully complete this unit will: * understand the main academic and scholarly debates on the nature and legacy of the Second World War in terms of its origins, strategy, social impact and political legacy; * have a good knowledge of a range of key debates on Europe and the Second World War; * have an understanding and appreciation of the nature of interdisciplinary study; * be able to think critically and theoretically about the Europe and the Second World War. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit. Content: Lectures and seminars will cover the following main topics. * Introduction and theoretical approaches (AHP) * Causes of the Second World War in Europe (AHP) * Strategy and Military Doctrine: - Blitzkrieg (AHP) - Total War (AHP) * Totalitarianism at War - Nazi Germany (DC) - Soviet Union (HJW) * Occupation and Resistance (HED) * War and Society (HED) |
