Description: | Aims: To assess the ability of students for original and individual thought and application to a specific project/ programme of work. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of the unit, the student should be able to demonstrate the ability to carry out a literature review, plan a program of activity, and organise materials, equipment and facilities as required. The successful student will be able to demonstrate an ability to carry out and report on a small research project. Skills: The following skills will be developed and assessed: * self-direction in tackling and solving problems, and ability to act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks; * an ability to continue to advance ones own knowledge and understanding, and to develop new skills to a high level; These are also transferable skills necessary for employment, requiring: the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility; decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations; and the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development. Content: A work of research presented as a short thesis, normally entailing either experimental or analytical or numerical modelling and their practical application to a researched topic. |
