To provide experience in the theory and application of transport planning.

Learning Outcomes:
The successful student will be able to demonstrate:
* an understanding of the principles of transport planning;
* knowledge of the principal methods used;
* an ability to undertake a transportation planning exercise;
* an appreciation of the ways in which transport projects may be evaluated.

Content:
The nature and purpose of transport planning: Demand and supply, nodes, relationship to land use, sustainable development. The administrative framework in the UK.
The planning process: economic concepts, trip generation, trip distribution, modal split, network building, trip assignment. Generalised cose, data collection, forecasting techniques. Principles of network design.
Introduction to appraisal and evaluation.
