Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To develop an understanding of the behaviour of timber, timber connections and timber products relevant to the design of timber structures.
To create an understanding of a range of timber engineering products and techniques.
To build enthusiasm, knowledge and skills to enable the student to continue to develop their knowledge in the future and thus be capable of implementing innovative timber engineering solutions.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate ability in the analysis of the structural behaviour of a timber structure. They will be able to evaluate structural behaviour and understand when and how to improve a design through use of different materials and techniques.
They will have experience in designing, making and testing a timber component.

Skills:
Intellectual skills
* Ability to apply the concepts and principles of structural engineering to the critical analysis of timber structures.
* To understand taught material taught
Professional/Practical skills
* To deal with architectural engineering issues in a systematic yet creative way, and to communicate the conclusions clearly.
Transferable/key skills
* Ability to collect, analyse, synthesise and present technical information.
* To demonstrate communication and team working skills.
* Ability to do simple research on the internet and use published information to digest, marshal and sort facts relevant to future design.

Content:
Each week students will attend a lecture that will identify, discuss and present timber engineering topics. These will include basic wood science, relationship of timber properties with moisture and load duration, timber connections, timber bridges, grid-shells, dynamics response, engineered timber products. The students will make and test a timber component and report on the process. There will be an individual submission discussing two key buildings.
